When John Rathwell started roasting coffee, it was far from what it is today, both in technique and flavour. John started roasting the simplest and most romantic way possible. Over an open fire using a cast iron pan.

While it sounds like it would produce some of the best coffee ever, the fact is it really doesn't. But the process was enough to get him hooked on roasting and John invested in his first coffee roaster. It was a small 1kg drum type roaster.

From there, John launched Beach Camp Coffee. He had a few simple goals. Roast a coffee that he wanted to drink every morning and always make the most environmentally sustainable choices for his business.

That included always using biodegradable packaging, allowing local mason jar refills and building his first roasting shack with as much reclaimed wood and up cycled pallet wood as possible.
